You may want to think twice before ordering that hot dog and BBQ sandwich at the baseball game. ESPN is making public some findings of health inspectors who recently visited sports stadiums and were alarmed at the lack of hygiene and food safety in many of the venues.
Poorly trained food service personnel. Spotty supervision. Hot weather. Limited storage. High volumes of food served quickly. These and many other factors appertaining to sport stadiums may result in the food being much more risky than similar items served in a restaurant.
ESPN's "Outside the Lines" reviewed health department inspection reports for food and beverage outlets at all 107 North American arenas and stadiums that were home to Major League Baseball, National Football League, National Hockey League and National Basketball Association teams in 2009.
At 30 of the venues (28 percent), more than half of the concession stands or restaurants had been cited for at least one "critical" or "major" health violation. Such violations pose a risk for foodborne illnesses that can make someone sick, or, in extreme cases, become fatal.
[END QUOTE]
NBC News add this in "Study Finds Serious Violations in NY Stadium Food": "The Verizon Center in Washington, DC, was rated the worst venue in the nation with 100 percent -- yes, all -- of its vendors getting cited. Wrigley Field, on the other hand, has a perfect record. But analysts note this could be because Chicago conducts its investigations on nongame days, when no food is being prepared."
To downplay the findings of health inspectors, stadium operators and food providers often claim that the statistics to look at are numbers of stadiums shut down, fines, administrative complaints, and documented cases of food borne illness and death associated with stadium food.
They also claim that technical food safety violations don't necessarily pose a serious health threat to consumers. It's the old "shrug your shoulders and act unimpressed" routine that politicians commonly use to deflect negative press.
We've heard such dodging from Big Pharma and the tobacco industry, so this is no surprise.
What they fail to take into consideration, in their denial, is that many fans won't report illness, and food borne illness is difficult to prove and trace to the source.
It's like saying, "Sure the facilities are filthy, but nobody's died yet, so what's the big deal?"
Another thing that complicates the food safety inspection is that many violations occur only when food service workers are present, in the midst of their service activities, thus cannot be discovered when the games are over and the fans have gone home.
[QUOTE]
The type of violations inspectors worry most about -- such as employees not washing their hands, food left out at unsafe temperatures, and raw food contaminating ready-to-serve food -- can't be detected when vendors are closed, said Jim Chan, health environments manager with Toronto Public Health.

We need to look at honey as more than just a natural sweetener, an alternative to processed sugar. Honey is far more than a delightful substance that pleases the tastebuds. Honey is loaded with nutrition and therapeutic properties. But it's wonderful that such a delicious product of nature is so good for us, too.
Honey comes in a variety of flavors, textures, and vitamin/mineral composition.
My favorites, as mentioned in a previous post "Raw Honey Experiment", are avocado, sour wood, orange blossom, blackberry, and unprocessed, pure, natural, organic honey (which is more like a paste than processed syrupy honey).
Local honey is recommended for allergy problems, as it contains the small amounts of nearby plant allergens that you're exposed to outdoors. Naturally Yours Grocery carries high quality local honey, as well as some super-charged exotic varieties.
Local Honey Blog explains this Anti Hay Fever quality of local honey.
[QUOTE]
Drinking local honey may work much like an allergy shot in that it exposes you to small amounts of allergens to help your body build immunity to the allergens. When bees pollinate to make honey, they bring back allergens from the flowers, trees, and other plants. This leaves small traces of those allergens in their honey.
Just like the doctor gives you small amounts of allergens when he or she gives you an allergy shot.
It is best to find raw honey that is as close to home as possible because it is far more likely to contain the same allergens that you are exposed to on a daily basis.
You should also start drinking the honey in very small doses, just in case of an allergic reaction to the pollen that is in the raw honey. Gradually work your way up to about two teaspoons a day.
This regimen should begin several months before the onset of allergy season.
The honey should be raw, unpasteurized, and unheated for best results. However, babies under the age of one should never consume raw honey due to the risk of botulism.
[END QUOTE]
Actually, I think they got that last statement wrong. Babies under one year old should not eat any type of honey, but pure, natural, raw, unprocessed, organic honey is the safest because botulism and other toxic molds cannot live in it.
To be on the safe side, keep all honey products, corn syrup, and molasses away from infants under 1 year old. There are divergent opinions on this topic.
Medical science is studying the properties of honey, but its powerful qualities have been known since ancient times. Honey is one of the safest, most proven and documented healing agents on earth. Let's consider some of the astonishing powers of honey.
12 Health Benefits of Honey
(1) Energy: honey contains about 64 calories per teaspoon, and its carbohydrates boost endurance and reduce muscle fatigue.
(2) Fat Burning: when dissolved in hot water, honey helps burn stored fat in your body, and combined with cinnamon or lemon, it helps in weight loss.
(3) Performance Enhancement: honey helps the system maintain proper blood sugar levels, muscle rejuvenation, and glycogen restoration after an athletic feat or a physical workout.
(4) Digestion: honey is easily digested, so your body doesn't have to work hard breaking down the ingested material, and it's known as an effective remedy for upset stomach.
(5) Antioxidant: the nutraceuticals in honey help remove free radicals from the body.
(8) Skin Care: honey combined with milk is used in many cultures as a skin softener and conditioner.
(9) Wound Healing: honey cleanses, deodorizes, disinfects, and stimulates wound tissue, which makes it a good salve to apply topically to wounds, burns, and ulcers.
(10) Throat Soother: honey is good for treating laryngitis and pharyngitis.
(11) Cholesterol Leveler: honey helps keep your cholesterol levels in check.
(12) Morning Sickness Antidote: honey has been found to assist in overcoming morning sickness during pregnancy.
You love organic fruit and vegetables and you try to eat the healthiest food available. It takes a lot of discipline and information to remain faithful to your ideal. However, you love the results of sticking to more wholesome foods for yourself and your family.
One way to strengthen your resolve to resist junk food propaganda, and medical profession errors and myths, is to learn more about healthy lifestyles. For example, if you find it hard to fight the urge to drink soda, you could do some research on why fruit juice, water, and herbal teas are so much better for you.
The more we learn, the more we can help ourselves attain optimum health -- and we increase our value to others.

Organics have grown at a rate of nearly 20 percent per year for the last few years, and industry experts are continuing to forecast slowing but steady growth.
Rapid growth in the organic sector has highlighted issues that need to be addressed: shortages of organic raw materials such as organic grain and organic sugar, product sales in a weak U.S. economy and competition from food marketed as “locally grown" or "natural." A shortage of affordable organic ingredients or products, such as corn and soybeans for livestock feed, left organic producers unable to meet market demand. (ERS 2009)
A study conducted by the Organic Trade Association (OTA) surveyed over 200 manufacturers, distributors and retailers about the organic industry in 2009.
The survey indicated that U.S. sales of organic products, both food and and non-food, have grown from $1 billion in 1990 to $26.6 billion in 2009, increasing 5.3 percent in the last year despite the current economic situation.
Organic food sales alone rose 5.1 percent, totaling $24.8 billion. Organic non-food sales rose 9.1 percent, totaling $1.8 billion.
Other findings of the 2010 Organic Industry Survey include:
* The percentage of U.S. food sales that are organic has now reached 3.7 percent.
* Fruits and vegetables account for the largest percentage of organic food sales, 38 percent, and reached nearly $9.5 billion in sales in 2009, an 11.4 percent increase from 2008 sales.
* Organic fruits and vegetables now represent 11.4 percent of all U.S. fruit and vegetable sales.
* The majority, or 54 percent, of organic food sales occurred at mainstream grocery stores.
* With $634 million in sales, organic supplements accounted for 35 percent of organic non-food sales, followed by organic fiber and organic personal care products.
Despite the current economy, U.S. sales of organic products have remained strong. The Mintel market research company found that frequent buyers of organics were remaining loyal but likely to purchase cheaper organic products. Infrequent buyers of organics, on the other hand, were likely to select fewer organic products.

Frozen shoulder is a stiffness and soreness that limits motion in your shoulder. Tissue that encapsulates the shoulder joint gets thick and constricts, resulting in reduced mobility, inflammation and pain.
In a previous post, "Fix Your Frozen Shoulder", we looked at exercise videos to help frozen shoulder.
Women experience frozen shoulder more than men do.
Probable causes and common contributing factors include diabetes, hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease, Parkinson's disease, clinical depression, immobilization associated with surgery, and injury.
It's akin to repetitive motion disorder, except that while repeating the same motion too many times could cause a shoulder to freeze up, it's more likely to develop when the shoulder remains motionless, or locked into a single position, for long periods of time. Frozen shoulder could occur due to spending large amounts of time, slumped over in a bad posture, on the computer, driving a truck, or peering into a telescope.
Pain can be managed with ice and heat. Cherry juice is known to have analgesic effects in some people. In some instances, even the common chocolate malted milkshake can help with this type of pain.
Some experts believe that inflammation is part of the healing process and should not be "attacked" with anti-inflammatory medicines. However, there do exist natural methods for calming the inflamed tissue, reducing the inflammation without completely interrupting its necessary work.
Here are some suggestions on natural remedies, herbal treatments, and foods that can help strengthen the connective tissue of your joints and muscles and assist a frozen shoulder to heal.
In Chinese herbal medicine, range of motion falls under the cold category. You might consider using a liver and kidney tonic that removes cold and dampness.
For pain relief, white willow bark, scullcap, hops, and valerian are recommended. You can take them in teas.
There are herbal pain ointments that may be useful in relieving the grinding aches and lightning stabs of pain associated with frozen shoulder. Deep slow contemplative breathing exercises can stabilize the energy flow and bring peacefulness to the shoulder.
Silica helps tissues retain moisture.
Herbs with high silica content can be beneficial for restoring elasticity to connective tissue. Horsetail tea and angelica (but not for diabetics, as it raises blood sugar levels) have provided help for sufferers.
Foods high in silica are alfalfa sprouts, beets, brown rice, bell peppers, soybeans, leafy green vegetables, root vegetables, cooked dried beans and peas, and whole grain breads and cereals.
To reduce inflammation, you can try turmeric (a major component of curry and yellow mustard), ginger, and bromelain (pineapple enzyme).
To help your body reduce inflammation eliminate polyunsaturated vegetable oils, margarine, vegetable shortening, all partially hydrogenated oils and all foods that contain trans-fatty acids. Read food labels to check for the presence of these oils.
Instead, use extra-virgin olive oil as your main fat and increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids found in oily, cold-water fish, flaxseeds or oil, and walnuts.
[END QUOTE]
Other natural substances that can be beneficial for frozen shoulder and conducive to joint and muscle health include chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine sulfate, ginger root extract, grape seed extract, alpha-lipoic acid, fish oils (EPA/DHA), quercetin, vitamins A, B2, B3, C, D3, E and folic acid, magnesium, zinc, selenium, manganese, boron, copper, and molybdenum.
In seeking expertise on frozen shoulders, I asked the opinion of a Twitter pal who works as a licensed therapist, Andrew Jecklin.
He tweeted me the following information:
[QUOTE]
The way I look at frozen shoulder is you have 4 choices:
1. Apply finger pressure to tender spots along ENTIRE shoulder girdle, including pecs, deltoids, teres, post/sup scaps etc.
2. Lightly contract 3-6 sec, then relax, & slightly stretch; repeat 3-6 x from new resting post. Repeat, changing angle.
3. Gently relax into stretch, & apply quick pressure to the stretching muscle, change the angle quick moving stretches
4. Gently stretch/move around while pressing with sustained finger pressure, digging & feeling around, slow movement/stretching
All of these address the entire shoulder girdle. Front, back, top, bottom, including anterior & post scapula as best you can.
That's my take on it anyway. If any of it is unclear, let me know. Good luck. Ha!
#2 -- it is often useful to contract against resistance, like a wall. When you press into it, you're contract, use wall to stretch.

Do you have a shoulder that radiates pain at the slightest movement of it beyond a limited parameter? Is your rotator cuff so tender and sore, you have severely restricted range of motion? Does your painful, stiff shoulder make it difficult to work or sleep?
If you have arthritis or decreased whole body exercise routines (being too sedentary: sitting around too much), or other muscle and bone issues, you may get a frozen shoulder by simply leaning on it to read in bed.
(2) Knock you out with anaesthesia, then forcibly manually move your arm to break up the scar tissue that keeps it in a rigid, painful, easily inflammed "frozen" state -- a procedure so astronomically painful, you would lose consciousness if they did while you were awake and alert.
(3) Physical therapy exercises that, while going up to the pain threshhold, averts from "going into" the pain zone in a brutal or damaging manner, but are still not pleasant to engage in.
That's it.
Alternative medicine offers one more suggestion:
(4) Diet consisting of fruit, vegetables, and herbs.
Frozen shoulder can be helped to a large degree, even completely healed, by using the last two methodologies: fluid movement and strenghthening exercises and diet.
You can't ignore frozen shoulder for long. It just gets worse and worse, more painful and limiting. It can actually be a cause for anxiety and despair, too.
Obviously, one problem in the body can sooner or later start impacting the entire system, especially sleep cycles, mood, and concentration. When pain is added to the mix, it can be a miserable turn of events that takes a long time to "get used to" and endure with resignation.
But wait. Who said we had to give up in defeat and depression? Let's take a look at some potential solutions that can help relieve the suffering, repair the damage, and stop the deterioration of frozen shoulder syndrome.
These videos are presented for your consideration. Later, we'll look at diet and herbs for relieving frozen shoulder syndrome and related ailments.
American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons "Frozen Shoulder"
[QUOTE]
A doctor can diagnose frozen shoulder based on the patient's symptoms and a physical examination.
X-rays or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) studies are sometimes used to rule out other causes of shoulder stiffness and pain, such as a rotator cuff tear.
Frozen shoulder will generally get better on its own. However, this takes some time, occasionally up to two to three years. Treatment is aimed at pain control and restoring motion.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) TIP:
What title should your blog post be, to drive the most web traffic to it?
One wording could be full of hot keywords, while another wording, meaning the exact same thing, could contain words that few people use when searching for information on the topic online.
You pit one keyword or keyphrase against another, and GoogleBattle displays the number of times people used the wording in the Google online search engine. They display a disclaimer: "NOTE: Your Battles most likely will be cached by Google and become searchable, plz think twice before battling your real names. :)"
Today, for example, I tested "fix frozen shoulder" vs. "heal frozen shoulder". I was guessing that these would be two of the most commonly used keyphrases typed into internet search engines by those who suffer frozen shoulder syndrome. I then tried some other combinations.
GoogleBattle results for "frozen shoulder" keywords:
fix frozen shoulder 980,000
heal frozen shoulder 54,900
cure frozen shoulder 81,900
frozen shoulder remedy 46,000
frozen shoulder exercise 161,000
frozen shoulder therapy 280,000
frozen shoulder video 939,000
Obviously, determined by the most popular keyphrase that I tested, "fix frozen shoulder" is the clear winner for the title of this post.
If you have a blog or a news page on a website, be sure to test alternative titles to your news headlines, articles, messages, blog posts and other dynamic web content. Use the natural language of your audience, which is constantly in flux and reflecting industry developments, new product hype, media events, and user behavioral trend shifting.
Let good judgment about communication and audience needs be your ultimate guide, but consider the SEO values of the exact wording you use. Along with semantic and business considerations, factor in the keyword popularity of a phrase as a high priority tactic in generating titles.

Organic Onion and Swiss Hash Browns
(1) Heat your electric skillet to 300 degrees.
(2) Add a splash of olive oil.
(3) Put 1-4 hash brown potato patties on the heating surface. Stir them and flip them around so they get olive oil on both sides.
(4) Brown both sides to partial cooking completion, so they're warm but not super hot and crispy yet.
(5) Sprinkle a little onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper on top of the hash browns. OPTIONAL: To spice them up, add a tiny pinch of curry or red cayenne pepper powder to each pattie.
(6) Slice several pieces of onion, chunky, lay them on top of the hash brown patties.
(7) Place sections of Swiss cheese slices on the hash browns, on top of the onions. Try to keep the cheese from dribbling over the sides of the potato patties, but it's okay if you get a bit of grilled cheese.
(8) Cover skillet. Cook for about 10 minutes.
(9) When the cheese is starting to get brown on the edges, it's done.
Dip your forked pieces of hash brown into ketchup and hot sauce.
Cherry juice. Grape juice. Tomato juice. Apple juice. Exotic flavors and healthy ingredients. Vegetable and fruit. You name it, we've probably got it. Organic. Natural. Good for you and your family.
