The snow blizzard of 2011 is an historic event. The photo above is from the NOAA/NASA GOES-13 satellite.
Massive snowdrifts have stranded people in dangerous situations of cold and isolation. Businesses, schools, and transportation systems shut down. Some have died from shoveling "heart attack snow".
Many cities have exhausted their snow clearance budgets already.
Thunder snow has been reported and snow tornadoes were predicted, though I'm not sure if such rare vortexes occurred.
Twitter hashtags include #blizzardofOz, #snOMG, #snowpocalypse, and #snowstadamus. 900 cars were stranded on Lake Shore Drive. It was the highest snowfall volume in Chicago since 1967.
